Getting Used to Your New Hearing Aids

It can take time to adjust to wearing hearing aids and hearing sounds differently. Our team can provide guidance and support as you become more comfortable with your devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hearing Aid Sales and Fitting

We know this can be overwhelming, and every website you check has a different suggestion or opinion.

The very first and most crucial step is a detailed consultation and thorough evaluation with your Audiologist. Is there hearing loss and are hearing aids recommended. If yes, the assessment will determine the degree of hearing loss, as well as your lifestyle, any physical considerations and of course your budget.

Your hearing aids, properly fit, should be comfortable right from the beginning, but they SHOULD sound different. The longer the hearing loss has been present, the longer the brain has adapted to the filter that hearing loss provides.  It can take a month to six months for the brain to fully adapt.  Consistency is the key, and we will encourage you to wear your hearing aids all day, every day.

We always hope you are excited about “fitting day!” We sure hope so, because it will take about 90 minutes!

We have been busy getting ready for you to ensure your success and comfort. We have your aids at the clinic and have checked to make sure everything is working to spec and charging properly.

We will make sure the hearing aids fit comfortably, feel secure and that no feedback is present.

We run Real Ear Measurements (REM) verifying that amplification is meeting targets for soft average and loud speech, so all are audible and comfortable. This is done by placing a probe tube down the ear canal, measuring sound in the ear canal.

We will typically reduce these targets for comfort allowing the brain to get used to the sounds around you.

After programming, we need to make certain that you are familiar with the hearing aids, how to tell the left from the right, that you are comfortable with the cleaning and maintenance of the instruments, how to charge them or change the batteries, how to insert and remove the hearing aids, and how to adjust volume controls if needed.

We will encourage you to wear the hearing aids all day every day, even if you are home alone. Your brain needs to learn what to pay attention to (speech, safety) and what to ignore (everything else.)

We will schedule follow-up appointments throughout your trial period to ensure we are moving towards prescription targets, that everything is comfortable, there is no feedback, and that you are wearing the hearing aids all day every day. Hearing treatment is a process, and we are in this together.  We always say we can’t fix that damaged nerve; we are trying to make it work as hard as it can.

Hearing aids can be adjusted throughout the trial period, and throughout the life of the hearing aids if changes to hearing thresholds occur.  Changes in lifestyle might also dictate programming changes are necessary.

The purchase and trial period are not the end of the relationship; they are just the beginning.  You should be seeing your Audiologists for appointments every 6 months for more thorough cleaning and maintenance, for changes to programming and for any updates. The cost for this is typically built into the cost of the hearing aids, at least through the warranty period, so make sure you see your Audiologist regularly.

Hearing aids are expensive, and regular maintenance goes a long way to keeping everything working well. Caring for your hearing aids will be covered at the fitting appointment, and again at the follow-up appointments. It should take only a few minutes a month but is so important to keep the hearing aids functioning properly.  There is typically no charge for wax filters or domes, so make sure you have a good supply. You should be seeing your Audiologist every 6 months for a thorough clean and check, vacuuming the microphones, drying the hearing aids, etc. We will also check to ensure there are no updates, that the battery continues to function well and make adjustments to the programming as necessary.

The first thing to do is to check the wax guard or filter.  These are tiny and easily plugged with wax, moisture or debris.  If that doesn’t work, call us!  We will do our best to get everything working properly as soon as possible.  If we don’t have an appointment available very quickly, we will encourage you to drop them off to minimize the time that you are without amplification.
